Calculation Breakdown
Enter course credits and assigned grade points to calculate semester SGPA.

* SGPA is computed directly from your entered course credits and assigned grade points without inferring boundaries from raw marks.

How Marksheet SGPA Is Calculated

Semester Grade Point Average represents the credit-weighted index of performance across all courses taken in a single term.

1. Course Credits (Cᵢ)

The weekly workload weighting assigned to lectures, tutorials, and practical lab sessions in your syllabus.

2. Grade Points (Gᵢ)

The discrete numerical index (0 to 10) awarded based on your final exam score or department bell-curve.

3. Credit Points (Cᵢ × Gᵢ)

The intermediate product multiplying a subject's credits by your grade point, reflecting total points earned.

4. Total Credit Divisor (ΣCᵢ)

The sum of all registered credits attempted in the semester, serving as the denominator.

The UGC CBCS SGPA Formula

SGPA = Σ(Course Credits × Grade Points) / Σ(Total Course Credits) = Σ(Cᵢ × Gᵢ) / ΣCᵢ

Calculated to two decimal places. Cumulative CGPA is subsequently calculated across multiple semesters using our SGPA to CGPA Converter.

Worked Semester Example

Consider a student with 5 courses in a semester under a standard 10-point CBCS grading system:

Course TitleCredits (Cᵢ)Letter GradeGrade Point (Gᵢ)Credit Points (Cᵢ × Gᵢ)
Engineering Mathematics4.0A+9.036.00
Data Structures4.0A8.032.00
Operating Systems3.0B+7.021.00
Computing Laboratory1.5O10.015.00
Professional Ethics1.5B6.09.00
Semester Total14.0——113.00
Result: SGPA = Total Credit Points ÷ Total Credits = 113.00 ÷ 14.0 = 8.07

10-Point Letter Grade Scale Reference

Adopted under the UGC Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) guidelines. If your institution utilizes fractional or alternative points (e.g. 7.5, 8.5), choose the exact numerical points awarded on your grade card.

Why We Do Not Guess Grades from Raw Marks

Percentage boundaries for letter grades differ across autonomous colleges, relative grading curves, and degree regulations. To maintain strict mathematical precision, enter the official letter grade or grade points awarded on your transcript.

Semester SGPA FAQs

How do non-credit or audit courses affect my SGPA?
Audit courses and mandatory non-credit subjects (such as Environmental Studies or Constitution of India) evaluate on a Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory basis. They do not carry academic credits and are omitted from both the credit-point numerator and the total credit divisor.
What happens to SGPA if I get an 'F' (Fail) or 'Ab' (Absent) grade?
An 'F' or 'Ab' grade contributes 0 grade points to the numerator, but the course credits remain in the denominator divisor. This significantly lowers your term SGPA. Once you clear the backlog in a supplementary examination, your university updates the grade point and recalculates your cumulative record.
Can an SGPA exceed 10.00?
No. On a 10-point scale, 10.00 is the mathematical ceiling, attained only if a student secures 'O' (Outstanding, 10 points) in every registered course credit for that semester.
