SGPA & CGPA Foundations

How to calculate CGPA from SGPA?
To calculate CGPA from SGPA, sum the SGPAs of all completed semesters and divide by the number of semesters if all terms carry identical credits: CGPA = (SGPA₁ + SGPA₂ + ... + SGPAₘ) / m. If semesters carry unequal credit loads, multiply each term’s SGPA by its semester credits, sum the products, and divide by total cumulative credits: CGPA = Σ(SGPAᵢ × Cᵢ) / ΣCᵢ.
How to calculate CGPA with credits?
Multiply each semester’s SGPA by its total credit allocation to determine semester credit points, add these points across all completed terms, and divide the total credit points by cumulative completed credits: CGPA = Σ(SGPA × Credits) / ΣCredits.
Can SGPA be converted to CGPA without credits?
Yes, using the simple arithmetic average method (SGPA₁ + SGPA₂ + ... + SGPAₙ) / n. However, this is mathematically equivalent to official CGPA only when all semesters carry equal total credits. If your syllabus has varying semester credits (such as 24 credits in Year 1 vs 16 credits in Year 4), your university requires the credit-weighted calculation.
Is CGPA simply the average of SGPA?
Not always. A simple arithmetic average assumes equal weighting across all semesters. In degree programs where foundational or project semesters carry different credit totals, universities calculate CGPA as the credit-weighted average. Check your syllabus credit matrix to verify if semester credits are equal.
What is the difference between SGPA and CGPA?
SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) measures academic performance in a single semester or term, calculated from individual course grades and credits. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) measures cumulative performance across all completed semesters in the degree program, stabilizing over time as total credits accumulate.
Can I calculate SGPA online?
Yes. Online calculators like SGPACGPA allow you to compute your SGPA from course credits and grade points, or calculate cumulative CGPA across semesters. All calculations on SGPACGPA run 100% client-side in your browser with zero remote data storage.

Percentage Conversion Rules

How do I convert CGPA to percentage?
Conversion rules are institution-specific and no single national formula applies across all universities. You must use the conversion formula specified by your degree-granting university or autonomous college, typically printed on the back of your official grade card. Common institutional examples include VTU 2018 (CGPA - 0.75) × 10, VTU 2022 NEP CGPA × 10, AICTE guideline (CGPA - 0.75) × 10, and Mumbai University CBCS (CGPA × 7.1) + 11.
Is 7.5 CGPA equal to 75%?
Not necessarily. Under a direct 10-multiplier rule (such as VTU 2022 NEP or Delhi University UGCF 2022+), 7.5 CGPA equals 75.0%. However, under historical or offset formulas such as DU CBCS batches up to 2021 (CGPA × 9.5), 7.5 CGPA equals 71.25%. Under VTU 2018 or AICTE model guidelines (CGPA - 0.75) × 10, 7.5 CGPA equals 67.50%. Under Mumbai University CBCS (7.5 × 7.1) + 11, it equals 64.25%. Always verify your university’s prescribed formula.
Where can I find the official conversion formula for my college?
Inspect the reverse side of your official university Grade Card, Statement of Marks, or Consolidated Transcript. It is also published in your university’s statutory academic regulations or exam ordinances. If no formula is specified, employers or admitting institutions may define acceptable model standards.
Can I calculate percentage from a marksheet?
Yes. To calculate percentage from a marksheet, divide the total marks obtained in your applicable subjects by the total maximum marks and multiply by 100: Percentage = (Total Marks Obtained / Maximum Marks) × 100. For school boards, ensure you include the specific subjects required by admitting colleges.

Target CGPA Planning

How do I calculate the SGPA required for a target CGPA?
Determine your total degree semesters (T), completed semesters (C), current CGPA, and desired target CGPA. The remaining semesters are R = T - C. The required future average SGPA is: Required SGPA = [(Target CGPA × T) - (Current CGPA × C)] / R. If remaining terms carry unequal credits, weight current and target values by completed and total credit sums.
What does "Mathematically Unachievable" mean?
In standard 10-point systems, the maximum possible SGPA in any term is 10.00. If reaching your target CGPA mathematically requires an average SGPA higher than 10.00 across remaining terms, the target cannot be achieved even with perfect scores. Our calculator displays your exact Maximum Achievable CGPA in this scenario.
When should I switch from Equal-Semester to Credit Planning?
Use Equal-Semester Planning for fast general trajectory estimates. Switch to "Plan by Credits" in your final year or when remaining semesters carry significantly lighter or heavier credit loads (such as an internship/project semester carrying only 12 credits).

Marksheet & Course SGPA

How is SGPA calculated using credits?
For each course, multiply its credit value by the numerical grade point earned on your 10-point scale to determine course credit points. Sum these products across all courses taken that semester, and divide by the total semester credits: SGPA = Σ(Credits × Grade Point) / ΣCredits.
How do I calculate SGPA from marks?
Universities do not calculate SGPA directly from raw exam percentages. Raw marks (e.g. 78/100) must first be converted into institutional grade points (e.g. 8 or 9) according to your college’s official grading scale and cutoff bands. Once you have grade points, multiply each by the course credits and divide the sum by total semester credits.
Why does SGPACGPA ask for Grade Points instead of raw marks?
Because grading bands, pass thresholds, and moderation curves differ significantly across universities and autonomous colleges. Guessing grade points from raw percentage marks without your specific college’s cutoff boundaries produces inaccurate SGPA figures. Entering the exact grade points shown on your marksheet guarantees mathematical fidelity.

Grading Scale Context & Standards

What is considered a good SGPA or CGPA?
Academic standards depend on your institution, field of study, and goals. On a 10-point scale across Indian collegiate institutions, a CGPA above 8.0 is generally considered very good, 8.5+ is competitive for premier scholarships and top-tier placements, and 9.0+ represents exceptional academic distinction. Context matters: competitive cutoffs differ between engineering, humanities, and professional degrees.
Is 7.5 SGPA or CGPA good?
A 7.5 CGPA is generally a solid academic standing. It clears the minimum eligibility cutoffs (typically 60% or 6.5–7.0 CGPA) for most campus placement drives, IT companies, and competitive examinations. For highly selective graduate schools or research fellowships, competitive profiles often trend higher (8.0+).
Is 8.5 SGPA or CGPA good?
Yes, an 8.5 SGPA or CGPA is widely regarded as an excellent academic standing. It comfortably exceeds placement screening thresholds at virtually all tier-1 campus recruiters, satisfies eligibility for premier postgraduate programs (such as GATE-based M.Tech admissions and IIM shortlists), and positions you well for merit scholarships.
Is 9.5 SGPA good?
A 9.5 SGPA represents outstanding, near-flawless academic performance, placing a student in the top percentile of their class or department. It typically qualifies for university gold medal consideration, Dean’s List honors, and competitive international graduate admissions.
Is 7.8 CGPA good in BTech?
Yes. In B.Tech and B.E. programs, an engineering CGPA of 7.8 is strong and comfortably qualifies a student for campus recruitment drives, tech industry applications, and postgraduate entrance exams. Most technical recruiters set eligibility cutoffs between 6.5 and 7.5.
Is 7.5 CGPA good for MBA admissions?
Yes. For Indian MBA entrance processes (such as CAT and national management institutes), a 7.5 CGPA secures strong graduation profile points. While certain top-tier IIMs assign tiered academic diversity scores where 8.0+ or 8.5+ yields maximum points, a 7.5 coupled with a high percentile provides a competitive candidacy.
Is 6.5 CGPA bad?
A 6.5 CGPA is not failing; in most universities, it represents a clear Second Class or First Class depending on ordinance thresholds. While it may sit near the cutoff boundary for certain selective campus drives (which require 60% or 6.5), students with 6.5 CGPA can secure strong placements through specialized technical projects, internships, or competitive exams.
Is 7.6 CGPA first class?
In the vast majority of Indian universities and autonomous institutions, 7.6 CGPA comfortably qualifies as First Class (or First Division). Most universities set the First Class boundary at 60% or 6.50 to 6.75 CGPA on a 10-point scale. Check your university’s degree classification ordinance for confirmation.

School Board Percentages

How do I calculate board percentage from marks?
Add the marks obtained across all required subjects, divide by the sum of maximum marks for those subjects, and multiply by 100. Always ensure you calculate percentage across the specific subjects mandated by your prospective college, state admissions council, or university board.
Does CBSE declare an official aggregate percentage or division?
No. Under CBSE Examination Bye-Laws (Rule 44.1) and Official Circular F.No.CBSE/COORD/CIRCULAR/2023 dated 30-11-2023, CBSE does not calculate, declare, or inform an overall percentage or award divisions. Admitting institutions or employers determine which subjects are considered for eligibility.
What is "English + Best 4" in ICSE?
CISCE does not compute an overall percentage on the Statement of Marks. "English + Best 4" (for ICSE Class 10) and "English + Best 3" (for ISC Class 12) are widely used admission conventions adopted by junior colleges and universities, where English is compulsory and the remaining highest scoring subjects are included.
